Conclusion

The objective of the reading instruction is to cultivate students’ communicativecompetence, to help students evaluate, analyze and understand the information.However, nowadays English reading instruction in China is mainly teacher-centeredand exam-oriented. Few teachers teach English reading for comprehension. Butreading ability is very important and worth developing. Therefore, English teachersshould facilitate the reading process by teaching students how to do effective reading,especially in a second language reading environment.In order to instruct students to do effective reading, teachers should find out waysto achieve the effective reading instruction. What this thesis intends to do is toconduct the research on how to improve the efficiency of reading instruction. Basedon the relevant theories, the author investigated, analyzed and compared the readinginstruction in two middle schools by adopting the research methods of questionnaireand interview. The research has found that the following eight aspects are essential tothe success of the effective English reading instruction: difficulty of the readingmaterials; students’ interest in attending English classes; ways to build motivation;teaching for comprehension; verifying reading strategies; teachers’ choice of readingmodels; the necessity of setting up the reading class; evaluating reading progress.English teachers should attach much importance to these eight factors. On the basis ofthe findings and the theories, the author also concludes the following suggestions:choosing the right material, building students’ motivation, teaching forcomprehension, using the text efficiently.
While conducting the research, the author has tried every means to make sure of thereliability and validity of the research, there still exist some limitations.First, the number of the sample of is limited and the participants are just from oneschool in both Shanghai and Chaohu.
