摘要:有效教学是许多教师的目标。然而,目前,低效率的阅读教学仍然存在,许多学校和困扰一些教师和学生。

n China, some Educationists have studied it, but few of them correlate it withspecific subjects, like English. There are many researchers studying effective teachingabroad, for example, Robert E. Slavin. In this thesis, the effective teaching theorieswill be combined with the reading theories theoretically and practically, the datacollected will be analyzed, and some effective strategies will be summarized to helpEnglish teachers enrich their practice of the effective English reading instruction.


Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Effective teaching
In the recent years, the research on the effectiveness of teaching has developedrapidly in China and abroad. The effective teaching has become one of the maintopics in many educational books and magazines. And there is much more researchabroad in this field.The foreign scholars have studied effective teaching for a long time, for example,educational psychologists, J.S. Bruner, Robert Slavin, and so on.The famous educational psychologist J. S. Bruner points out that the teachingtheory is concerned about how to teach what students want to learn (quoted in Chen &Liu, 2006). Effective teaching, requiring less effort and gaining more achievement,can be considered as a pursuing goal for teachers. And effective reading means to readaccurately and efficiently, and to understand the passage clearly. If teachers caninstruct students to obtain their reading purpose in specified time, then the teachingcan be called effective teaching. Although he did not point out the distinct definitionof effective teaching, what he discussed is the content of effective teaching.In the seventh chapter of Robert Slavin’s Educational Psychology (Slavin,2008),he thinks an effective class should involve various teaching methods, for example,direct instruction, discussion, cooperation, and so on. Although those methods havedifferent philosophical bases, a teacher with abundant experience will not deny that ateacher should be familiar about all those methods, besides, he should know how andwhen to apply them. Slavin also asserts the importance of the effective directinstruction; especially the serialized steps in teaching activities whose consensus havebeen reached by many researchers and teachers.
Yuan Qinglin (Yuan Qinglin,2004) summarizes the four methods of effectiveteaching which were used widely in American schools. They are Direct Instruction,holistic Instruction, Foxfire Approach, and Theme Circulation.Yao Limin (Yao Limin,2005) introduces and commented on the effective teachingabroad, especially the characteristics of teachers and the behavior of an effectiveteacher.In China, the earliest discussion about the effective teaching was in the field ofcontemporary educational psychology, which was written by Chen Qi and Liu Rude(2006). In this book, the author elaborates on the effective teaching in one chapter,including the presentation of the effective teaching, the effective teaching model ofCarroll and the QAIT model, the characteristics of an effective teacher, the effectiveteaching methods coping with the different tasks and different types of the students.
