摘要:The theory and practice of role play has had a long history. The phenomenon ofrole play has fascinated philosophers, educators, psychologists for years. All ofstudies reveal a life-long search for the meaning of play and its role in life, and culture.

The mission of the course is to promotestudents’ learning interest, making them build up self-confidence and developingcollaborative learning ability. To carry out the mission, the curriculum highlightsstudents’ real practice and experiences in the process of language learning.So far, a number of teachers and experts have done lots of researches on thisaspect, but we can hardly find out any of them concerning how to improve thelistening and speaking abilities of the junior middle student especially those whostudy in rural middle school in china.

2. Implementation of Role Play


2.1 Role Play and Curriculum
The modern curriculum is learner-centered. Such a curriculum will containsimilar elements to those contained in traditional curriculum development, but the keydifference is that, in the former, the curriculum is a collaborative effort betweenteachers and learners, since learners are closely involved in the decision-makingprocess regarding the content of the curriculum and how it is taught. The adoption ofa learner-centered orientation implies differentiated curricula for different learners.This is because it is unrealistic to expect extensive participation in curriculumplanning by learners with little experience of language learning. When dealing withinexperienced learners, it is often necessary for the teacher to begin by making mostof the decisions.The role-play model is extremely applicable to several important educationalobjectives. Through role play, students increase their abilities to recognize their ownand other people’s feelings, they can acquire new behaviors for handling previouslydifficult situations, and they can improve their problem-solving skills.

2.2 Preparation
Before the implementation of role play, it is important that the selection ofcontent and objectives is something which is shaped and refined. The content must besuitable to students or the outcome of ongoing dialogue will be worse. As no learninggroup is homogenous, teachers are always in need of activities that can be graded tosuit a wide range of abilities. Teachers should arrange different roles according tothe current situation, students’ pReference, their age and psychology, and so on. Roleplay is an excellent exercise for dealing with this problem and can be graded in anumber of waysRoles can be designed with faster or slower students in mind. It is obvious thatthe school governor has the most difficult role. He has not only to concentrate on whatis being said, and give his own comments, but also to make sure everyone gets achance to speak, to open and close the meeting, and to make sure it runs smoothly.This is a role for a student who is fairly fluent and confident, not one who has toconcentrate closely on every utterance in order to follow the discussion.
