摘要:In the field of cognitive linguistics, researches about cognitive metaphor have been made bymany researches, especially for the conceptual metaphor and its influence on the second languageteaching. However, there is a lack of making a research to investigate the metaphor use of Chinesecollege students in China. Although this research has existed aboard, its enlightenment and instructionis limited for Chinese college students. Therefore, this study regards Chinese college students as thesubjects in order to expose the condition and the features of their metaphor use in the process ofwriting. It is a combination of quantitative and qualitative research on the metaphor use of Chinesecollege students.
Chapter V Conclusions and Pedagogical Implications
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the use of metaphor for the Chinese collegestudents in the process of writing. Two classes of non-English majors are invited as the subjects, fromGrade two in the science department of North University of China. The subjects all finished at least 5years’ English learning before entered in this university. This thesis has made comparisons between themetaphor use of the natives and Chinese college students from perspective of three types: orientationalmetaphor, ontological metaphor and structural metaphor. What’s more, in order to find out thedifference between the natives and Chinese college students, between higher group and lower group ofthe inner Chinese college students, 80 sample writings are created by Chinese college students, and thenmaking analysis on the causes of avoiding to use the metaphor. The followings are the main findingslisted.
5.1 Major findings of the study
Metaphor research has become the best way for English teaching and English learning. It is ratherdifficult to master the metaphoric thought and metaphoric language in second language learning, and itis not very easy in acquisition. This study mainly makes a survey to use the metaphor for Chinesecollege students. The following are the chief views and the main findings.First, there exists big difference between Chinese college students and English natives in the use ofconcept metaphor. Although the largest number of concept metaphor items created by non-Englishmajors, the frequency of the use of concept metaphor forms by Chinese college students is still ratherlower than that by the native. A careful study of ontological metaphor expressions used the greatestnumber of OBJECT IS HUMAN forms being created by Chinese college students, but this kind ofmetaphor expressions written by the natives are much less in frequency compared with those byChinese college students. The study indicates that Chinese college students are all not good at the use oforientational metaphor, namely, they can not master or apply the orientational metaphor and structuralmetaphor better. In a word, Chinese college students use the concept metaphor less than the natives.The main reason for this phenomenon is owing to the influence from mother language negativetransport.
5.2 Pedagogical implications
