摘要:While teaching the college English, the author finds that many students spend a lot oftime in learning vocabulary by heart,such as CET-4, CET-6, GRE,but they are not able toimmediately retrieve corresponding vocabulary from the brain when language output isneeded, or usage of words and expressions is not appropriate and not keeping with habits ofnative speakers.
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
British linguists D. A. Wilkins (1972) said that without speech sounds and grammar,people could convey a little information, but without vocabulary, people were able to conveynothing. As vocabulary is the basic language material, which sustains grammar and speech,the language will lose the practical significance without vocabulary. Therefore Englishvocabulary teaching is the foundation of the whole English teaching. Allen (1983) pointed outthat the vocabulary teaching was an important section in the English teaching, but for avariety of reasons, vocabulary teaching had been ignored. However, in recent years because? of teaching needs and the deepening of the research theory, vocabulary teaching gets moreattention, becoming the key point of language teaching.Researches of EFL have shown that vocabulary of English learners is closely related totheir whole level, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Under normalcircumstances, those who have large vocabulary size are able to think quickly, express theirideas exactly and fluently, understand passages better, and write the composition with richcontents. Linguists have found out that if you have mastered 1000 words in common use, youare able to interpret 80.5 percent contents of the passage in regular English(Waiig Rongpei,1997).In accordance with College English Curriculum Requirements (2007) of NationalMinistry of Education,”College students should master about 4795 words and 700 phrases(including high school vocabulary), of which about 2000 words are positive, and students arerequired to use these vocabulary proficiently in the oral and written expressions on the base ofcognition ”. So, the vocabulary size and correct application of the vocabulary are theimportant symbols to measure the level of students, having the direct impact on theircommunication skills. On the other hand, century is full of creativity. With thetransformation of education concept, education function and relative disciplines about foreignlanguage teaching, in the writer's opinion, language teaching ought to ask for the initiativerequirements.

1.2 Significance and Purpose of the Research

Because the output of a word,which is more active and more complicated, isdifferent from understanding a word (Shu Dingfang, Zhuang Zhixiang, 2002). According tothe viewpoint of Wallance(1982), to really master a word ought to meet the followingrequirements: (1) to identify the oral and written form of the word; (2) to remember the wordat any time;(3)to connect the proper subject or concept with the word;(4) to apply the wordwith right granimar;(5)to pronounce the word clearly;(6)to spell the word exactly in thewriting;(7)to use the word in the collocation;(8)to be aware of the connotative meaning andassociative meaning of the word.How to develop students' abilit]^ to acquire and use the word correctly is becoming a keyproblem.
