o a further research on the study of Siyanova et al. The author will use the RT(Reaction Time) experiment, which referenced the study of Jiang Nan'sexperiment—OLGJ (On-line grammaticality judgment task),to find out the answerof the specific research questions:1) For Chinese EFL learners, do the frequent binominal expressions read faster thanthe infrequent reversed forms and the abnormal phrases?2) Are there exist differences between the different language levels of the subjects?3) What inspirations that the research enlighten the educators in second languageacquisition?


  
  13 Significance of the Research研究的意义
  As stated above, the importance of formulaic sequences in language acquisitionis becoming ever more apparent. According to the studies that have done by anumber of researchers such as Pawley & Syder (1983), Nattinger & DeCarrico(1992),Wray (2002), Schmitt & Carter (2004), Spottle & McCarthy (2004) and soon,the use of formulaic sequences contribute to fluent, well-formed, and appropriatelanguage. As Underwood, Schmitt, and Galpin (cited in Schmitt, 2004) said that theunderlying belief is that preformulated sequences of language, which are stored inthe mind as wholes, can be recognized and retrieved with a minimum amount ofprocessing effort,which facilitates quick and accurate language use. However, theactual mechanics of how they are processed are not clear. In order to put forwardsuch a research, Underwood, Schmitt, and Galpin used an eye-movement techniqueto explore how the eye samples the words in a text, on the assumption that thisindicates the underlying mental processing controlling the eye movement(Underwood & Schmitt, cited in Schmitt, 2004). On the foundation of Underwood,Schmitt, and Galpin's Experiment, Schmitt & Underwood did another empiricalstudy to explore the processing of formulaic sequences,through a self-paced readingtask. Further more,with the great help of Kathy Conklin & Walter Van Heuven,Anna Siyanova did a research about the processing of binominal expressions insentence context,through an ERP investigation technique. All their studies supportthe notion that formulaic sequences are processed holistically or at least that themind is able to predict the end words of the formulaic sequences from the previouswords in the formulaic language.Following the trend of psycholinguistic approach to FS,this thesis is trying todo a further research on the study of Siyanova et al. The author will use a differentmethod to do an empirical study in Chinese EFL learners' reaction to binominalexpression, trying to answer the question that "Whether FS is stored and retrieved asa whole in mental lexicon?" Whatever the experiment result is,this study willdevelop the theories on psycholinguistic approach to FS with a new angle. And itwill rich the FS theories to some degree. What's more, this study will offer a newmaterials, new thoughts and new methods in education theories.Adapting the research methods which had been improved from the previousones by remedying some possible drawbacks in each one,the thesis provides a newmethod (the RT of binominals, reading) to do an empirical study about thepsychological reality of formulaic sequences, which is to say that this thesis use ainterdisciplinary method to do the empirical research, providing another referenceand some fresh blood to the future studies.
