Conclusion
Edna Annie Proulx is an American journalist and author. Her second novel, The Shipping News, has won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for fiction in 1994. The Shipping News creates emotional resonance for thousands of readers by normal people's story with soul experience. Siren Aabye Kierkegaard is a profound and prolific writer in Danish. He is known as the "father of existentialism". The concept of anxiety is one of the most influential theories in Kierkegaard's philosophy system. In the field of psychology, anxiety has always been studied as a negative psychological factor. But Kierkegaard gives the anxiety a positive meaning in philosophy level. He regards anxiety as the primary and inherent mood of the man. Anxiety shows the constant state of human beings. Under the pressure of the environment, the man
usually created a false self in the daily life, as an actor playing a character that is inconformity with him. The false self blinds the authentic self. Gradually heloses his basic self-consciousness and all his identities both in family and community. Compared with Mockingburg, Newfoundland is not only a rural island apart from the modern world to Quoyle, but still a place called "homeland" that he can find true himself in it. Annie Proulx describes different kinds of anxieties in The Shipping News. The anxiety often has its root in the characters' living environment. Anxiety can appear as a resistance
which causes hindrances for the human development. This anxiety is serious for human beings. In this case, it is very important to find a way to eliminate the anxiety. Quoyle proves that one can barely fight his anxieties successfully by confronting it instead of neglecting it Quoyle looses his anxiety of water after he nearly drowned, and overcomes his anxiety of getting involved into a new relation with a woman, and finally succeeds in taking charge ofhis life Quoyle's aunt is an example for somebody who has managed to cope with their anxiety.
