Chapter One Introduction

1.1 A Brief Introduction to Yanshi Jiaxun

This section will make a brief introduction to Yanshi Jiaxun from its author, themes and importance in Chinese history to clarify the values of Yanshi Jiaxun. 

1.1.1 A Brief Introduction to Yan Zhitui

The introduction of the author plays a significant role in the study of Yanshi Jiaxun. His life experience and writing style affected the work’s whole structure, themes, and linguistic style etc. The following part will introduce Yan Zhitui.

Yan Zhitui was descended from Yan clan, which was a prestigious family with rich cultural heritage. The ancestors of the Yan family could be traced back to Yan Hui who was an outstanding disciple of Confucius. Yan Hui was known for his benevolence. Yan’s ancestors believed in Confucianism which made them acquire prominent official position, so Yan’s descendants regarded Confucianism as the standards of virtue. And all Yan’s descendants were proud of it. After Yan Hui, there was Yan Han, an outstanding ancestor of the Yan family in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Yan Han was filial, upright, and was loyal to emperor. Born in such a grand family with rich family culture, Yan Zhitui was influenced by Confucianism from childhood. 

1.2 Research Purpose, Significance and Questions

Chinese nation has brilliant achievements in language and culture, especially extensive Chinese traditional culture. It permeates in Chinese classics. Yanshi Jiaxun is one of the most influential classics on family instructions. As a media carrying Chinese culture, Family instructions have affected Chinese from generation to generation. To spreading the culture of Chinese family instructions, it is particularly important to translate Yanshi Jiaxun into English. 

So far, there are three completed versions of Yanshi Jiaxun in English, namely Family Instructions for the Yen Clan by Deng Siyu in 1968, Admonitions for the Yan Clan by Zong Fuchang in 2004, and Family Instructions for the Yan Clan by Tian Xiaofei in 2021. The thesis takes Zong’s version as its major subject of research, while takes the other two for reference. 

G. Steiner elucidated and summarized translating into trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation. His discussion sheds a light on the present translation studies. The present thesis intends to conduct a study on the English translation of Yanshi Jiaxun from the perspective of G. Steiner’s hermeneutic translation theory. 

The study on the Chinese-English translation of Yanshi Jiaxun would shed a light on the translation of other volumes of Chinese classics. Translation on Chinese classics is one of the approaches to broadening the spreading of Chinese culture and is of prominent importance to making Chinese culture known in international communities. 

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Translation of Yanshi Jiaxun: A Literature Review

In this section, the present study will mainly review previous studies on the Yanshi Jiaxun. The research on Yanshi Jiaxun abroad will mainly introduce its foreign language translation and the research on the English version.
