Long since its publication, Miller’s Death of a Salesman has captured the interest of several critics and academics. Several academics commented the play from various aspects. While studying the text of Death of a Salesman, many foreign critics tend to place a lot of emphasis on thematically research. The lists cover issues like morality, family relationship, and the meaning of the American Dreams. Lew Livesay argued that the drama represents the theme of Americans from frenzied pursuit success to the disillusionment and social abandonment (Lew Livesay ,2007：21-52).Nicole De Sapio started from the social and historical background of the United States, and took “Gold” as the main image in his article. (Nicole De Sapio 2008: 67-76) Moreover, Martin Robert A thought that the play represented not just the destruction of the American ideal but also the destruction of the dreams of common people in society, such as Willy. It conveyed Miller’s sorrowful viewpoint on the unhealthy societal attitudes present in American culture (Martin Robert A. 1996:106). Critics also looked at the impact of the protagonist Willy’s Jewish identity on the tragic themes of the play in addition to the thematic research on families. Cardullo Robert stated Arthur Miller’s religious identity which reflected Miller’s conflicted impulse to write either a Jewish family play or a universal drama about American life. (Cardullo Robert ,2012:127-130) Ribkoff Fred examines the identity crises of the play’s characters in shame, guilt, empathy, and the search for identity in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman (Ribkoff Fred, 2007:122). Both Caplan Debra and Bert Cardullo analyzed the Jewishness in Death of a Salesman. Caplan contended that despite Miller’s denial, some features and exchanges in the play might shed light on aspects of Jewishness (Caplan Debra ,2015:194-217).

1.2 Studies at Home

Compared with the foreign research, the domestic research on the Death of a Salesman started at the end of the 20th century. At first, critics focused their attention on the study of dramatic texts, including the analysis of themes, characters and artistic features of the texts. Hong Zengliu, Zhang Yuhong used expressionism theory to analyze the stage arrangement in the drama Death of a Salesman. Hong Zengliu and Zhang Yuhong believed that Arthur Miller adopted the alternate indoor and outdoor sets to reflect the whole life of Willy Loman as a salesman in one day and two nights. Within the framework of realistic drama, the play partially incorporates expressionism. Miller used flashbacks in the drama which broke the plot limitation and the boundaries between imagination and reality, past and present. At the same time, the flashbacks reflected the broader social life through the complex psychological activities of the characters. Therefore, expressionism is the distinctive feature that distinguishes the play from other works (Hong Zengliu, Zhang Yuhong ,1999:83-86). Above all, the other researches show that the drama has rich connotation and great academic research value.
