6.1 Major Findings of the Study
Through analysis of the related theory of the 5E model and preliminarypreparations,the thesis combines the idea of problem-orient with 5E model andproposes Problem-oriented 5E Model,then clarifies the model's principles.Next,theauthor implements the model in EC.After a semester of experimentation,the authorsuccessfully collected quantitative(learning engagement questionnaires andobservation reports)and qualitative(interview and teacher oral report)data.
The principal conclusion of the research is that the Problem-oriented 5E Model isfound adequate to improve the learning engagement of junior high school students inEnglish reading class.This is concluded from the analysis of the learning engagementquestionnaires,the observation reports,the interview,and the teacher's oral reports.First of all,according to results of the learning engagement questionnaire,before theexperiment,EC and CC are not significantly different from each other in learningengagement—the level of EC is even lower than CC.With the Problem-oriented 5EModel in EC,the level of learning engagement is improved in this term.EC’s meanscore after the experiment is higher than CC’s in all the dimensions of learningengagement.Even under the negative impact of Covid-19 on schools,the differencebetween the two classes is of significance.Besides,students in EC had made lots ofprogress compared to the level of learning engagement before the experiment.Theaverage scores of all the dimensions are improved.The improvement is significant.Furthermore,the change in affective engagement is extremely significant among thethree dimensions.Secondly,according to the classroom observation,students in EC continued to advance during the experiment.It even surpassed CC in nearly all thedimensions of learning engagement.Finally,interview and teacher oral reports,as thesupplement qualitative data,can also confirm the effect of the Problem-oriented 5EModel.Students in EC believe that their learning engagement has been improved thisterm,especially their emotional and behavioral engagement.The teacher holds apositive attitude towards this teacher model during the experiment.To sum up,boththe quantitative and qualitative data corroborate the positive effect of theProblem-oriented model on learning engagement.
