Chapter One Introduction
1.1 The research background
It is generally acknowledged that reading is of critical importance for everyone,especially for the students who are learning language because reading is not only a vitaltunnel to get information, but also a way to please the readers. It is an integrated ability, tosome extent, to increase other language skills. So it is necessary for students to develop agood reading habit and ability, which is reflected in the syllabus of both in middle schooland college English teaching. It stipulates clearly that “our teaching aim is to train thestudents to have a higher level of competence in reading...” (2000). Thus attention is muchmore paid on the teaching English reading currently.For a long time, teachers, however, are used to focusing on the grammar and wordsinstruction, which makes students feel that comprehensive reading is very difficult, evenoccurs the “understanding crisis”. There are many reasons including insufficientvocabulary, unstable grammar knowledge and lack of background knowledge etc.Therefore, to solve the problem, an appropriate and effective reading method is expected tobe found for the purpose of instructing the reading teaching and in class.Interest is a both fashionable and ancient concept. Einstein once describes the interestas the best teacher. Interest is a driving force for someone to be eager to learn or take upsome activities. Reading is the basis in people’s lifelong study and development. Readingcan provide readers with a way of getting knowledge. English reading interest is thedecisive element in English teaching and learning. So stimulating learners’ reading interesteffectively can guarantee the quality of the English teaching and learning.

1.2 The research significance and the purpose
Globalization provides more and more chances of intercultural communication,during which English is used most frequently. In fact, in China, English has long beenregarded as such an important language that a large number of students flood to learn it attheir very early age. English reading, however, is the most important but the most difficultpart for students to study. It is still an obstacle for students not to pass. It is required tochange the traditional way of foreign language teaching and explore a model which canimprove students’ reading interest and ability. Therefore, this research will introduce thenarrow reading, a new model, to the English reading training class in Junior High School.The purpose of this
thesis is to test whether narrow reading is more helpful to improvestudents’ English reading comprehension than the traditional model.Narrow reading in English reading training class in junior high school has theoreticaland practical significance. For one thing, narrow reading is a new teaching model, which isnot systematic. Based on the previous research, therefore, this research will not onlyillustrate the definition and the role of the narrow reading, its theoretical basis and therelated research abroad and at home, but also explore the empirical research of Englishreading training in Junior High School. This research is expected to give someenlightenment to the future studies in narrow reading. For another, this research has somepractical significance as well. Narrow reading has already been applied in English readingtraining of college, vocational college, business English, and extracurricular reading.
