摘要:The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between EFL learners'English working memory capacity and their English reading comprehension ability.This study is comprised of two experiments, one is computerized reading span testdesigned to measure subjects' English working memory capacity.
Chapter One Literature Review
1.1 Related Theories on Working Memory
Baddeley (1986) had defined working memory as the ability to simultaneouslymaintain and manipulate information in the performance of complex cognitive tasks.This definition laid a foundation for the theories on working memory and because ofit, working memory is believed to be dramatically significant in cognitive activitiessuch as reasoning, learning, problem solving, and of course, language production andcomprehension. Human information processing theory deals with how people receive, store,integrate, retrieve, and use information.In 1890,James, W (in Lu Zhongyi, 2000) put forward concepts of primary andsecondary memory. The concept of primary memory in the system referred toshort-term memory. After the Second World War, psychologists began to study thetemporary capacity-limited short-term memory for the need of engineeringtechnology under the influence of new and developing sciences such as informationtheory. In 1965,Waugh and Norman (in Lu Zhongyi, 2000) proposed the model oftwo kinds of memory system based on the two terms put forward by James. Muchevidence was provided to prove the existence of short-term memory. When sensory memory was proposed and confirmed,the model of two kinds of memory appeared tobe defective. In 1968,sensory memory was absorbed into memoiy system byAtkinson and Shiffrin (in Baddeley, 1998). And they put forward the model of three-stage memory system. Therefore, the original three-component informationprocessing system was proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968). Their memorysystem dominated the 1970,s and 80's. It is composed of sensory memory, short-termmemory and long-term memory. After the proposition of the concept of workingmemory,short-term memoiy was replaced by working memory in the humaninformation processing system. Carroll's model of information processing system(2008) is adopted in the present study to explain the function of working memory inthe human information processing procedure.

1.2 Related Theories on Reading Comprehension
In modem society, reading comprehension plays an important role in gettinginformation for people especially for students who are in mental and intellectivedevelopment. In this section, definition of reading comprehension is addressed firstly.Then, three levels and three models of reading comprehension are introduced. The appearance of written word has changed the way of getting information forhuman because it turns information from sound existence into visual existence whichcan be stored for a longer time even permanently and spread more widely. Meanwhile,reading has become an essential and extremely important cognitive activity to get information in modem society. Therefore, it has attracted gradually more attentionfrom scholars and scientists in many different fields.Reading comprehension is a complex cognitive activity, a meaningfulpsycholinguistic process. Reading comprehension and reading decoding are two maincategories of reading skills. Reading decoding is regarded as basic reading skill whilereading comprehension is more complicated.
