and justify the principles guidinghim in the administrative policy of the government, convince a national audience of hisappropriateness and benefits, mold public opinion, inspire public action, present the newgovernment in a favorable light and win the support for his incoming term.Given the political and social significance of APIA, the study of it cannot beexaggerated. And most of these inaugural addresses are produced and polished by a group ofprofessional writers, who are usually talented, eloquent, and gorgeous rhetoricians, so manyinaugural addresses have become the classical masterpieces in American literary history andpossessed high linguistic values as a corpus to study. As has mentioned above, the modeling of ES is informed by the dialogism andheteroglossia, “under which all verbal communication, whether written or spoken, is'dialogic' in that to speak or write is always to reveal the influence of, refer to, or to take upin some way, what has been said/written before, and simultaneously to anticipate theresponses of actual, potential or imagined readers/listeners” (Martin, 2008:92). As for APIA,an important variety of politics discourses, it is primarily meant to be heard, and thewordings are chosen for its oral or spoken qualities. In so speaking, it reveals the dialogicquality to anticipate the responses of the actual listeners-the American citizens, their support, advocacy or objections to the issue under discussion. Meanwhile, every address is carefullyprepared and polished in advance, making the wording possess qualities of written discourse. In order to realize the function of evaluation and persuasiveness to seek alignment andsolidarity with the audience, the addresser often bases his arguments on what have been saidby his predecessors and the utterances from the classic, making the "utterances exist againsta backdrop of other concrete utterances on the same theme” (Bakhtin, 1981:281). Theinherent dual genre features of APIA, a combination of oral and written discourse, lead it tobe rich in the ER of "intersubjective positioning" (Martin, 2008:95), so it is thought rationalto locate it in a theoretical framework based on the dialogic perspective.Wilhelm von Humboldt (1836) once noted, "there can never be a moment of truestandstill in language, just as little as in the ceaseless flaming thought of men,,. With thepassing of time, language is perpetually in a continuous change and development, so are theuse of ERs in APIA which has had a history over 220 years. We believe 220 years is not solong to change a language, but neither too short for a language to change. Though differentsocial and personal backgrounds will, to some extent, influence the wording of APIA,making the address reflect the president's personal style in the use of language, every APIAis well-prepared and polished by many scholars from different fields in advance, and itscontents involve almost all the aspects of society, which can not be accomplished by thepresident himself. Some scholars (King &Ragsdale, 1988) have studied APIA from theperspective whether an inaugural address modifies or abandons a centered and unified self.Their study results show that such a self has been plural, inconsistent and at timescontradictory by the emergence of several factors. Their study further proves that everyAPIA is the collective endeavor of a group people. It is more appropriate to take all APIAesas self-contained historical documents, reflecting
