摘要:As a novel that describes the black experience in America and the human struggle for individuality and identity, Invisible Man stays sixteen weeks on the best-seller list. Some critics claim that it is the most important American novel that appeared after World War II.
3.1.2 Blues notes in Invisible Man
Blues language and rhythms resound through Invisible Man. As a musical form, the blues is an autobiographical chronicle of personal catastrophe expressed lyrically. Blues expresses both the agony of life and the possibility of overcoming it through sheer toughness of spirit. All black writers have agreed that the blues has been the most cultural contribution to American art. “For Ellison, the blues is an impulse to keep the painful details an episodes of a brutal experience alive in one’s aching consciousness, to finger its jagged grain, and to transcend it, not by the consolation of philosophy, but by squeezing from it a near-tragic, near-comic lyricism” (Hersey, 1974: 100)
Ralph Ellison’s musical background provided him with rich knowledge of blues. Blues provides Ellison with the greatest literary sources. In Invisible Man, Ellison skillfully plays many blues notes into the lines. In chapter Two, Jim Trueblood, a sharecropper, was once a blues singer. When he was away from his family after his sin, he tries and fails to explain himself to the minister. But religion cannot accommodate or justify his sin and thus cannot help him make sense of his behavior; he tries to determine on his own the extent of his guilt, turning the incident over in his mind. Eventually, he sings the blues; the music he creates allows him, finally, to come to terms with what he has done. He insists on returning home and facing the consequences of his actions with renewed strength.
