Market Segmentation Project
This assignment will conduct the market segmentation project of Hungry Jack Easy Mash’d Instant Potatoes based on the analysis of the paper “The Rise of the Real Mom” published by Advertising Age. The proposed sub-segments are demographic segmentation and Benefit segmentation as follows.
Demographic segmentation
Segmentation by demographic factors, that is, by age, gender, occupation, income, family size, family life cycle, ethnicity, religion, nationality and other variables, divides the market into different groups.
From this article, it knows that women control $4.3 trillion of the $5.9 trillion in U.S. consumer spending, or 73% of household spending. Thus women have large spending power of Hungry Jack Easy Mash’d Instant Potatoes. In addition, the survey found that women 30 and older, even those in work force, tend to value marriage and parenthood over career and education, reaching 65% and 64%, respectively. Within this age period, age 35-40 is considered as the consumer group with the strongest spending power. Their areas of interest are not only concentrated in food purchase, clothing, cosmetics and entertainment, their investment in travel, buying houses, cars, luxury goods and works of art has also increased significantly. Therefore, the women with age 35-40 could be sub-segmented as the target consumers. To attract this group of consumers, Hungry Jack Easy Mash’d Instant Potatoes can focus on taste and packaging, because these consumers’ purchase are mainly for their family, especially for children. Therefore, it could launch the children’s series and use the cartoon packing.
Benefit segmentation
Pursuit of specific interests, product benefits, such as price, quality and so on. Due to the current economic climate, today’s housewives are more concerned about the product price. Some women will consider the price before convenience, buying whatever is on sale, especially if it’s “buy one, get one free”. Usually they weight the price with the benefits of products. Thus it can be seen that their income determines the weighing of product price. According to a survey, between 1990 and 2006, women’s median income grew 32.9% to $20,014, while men’s grew only 6.3% to $32,265. This shows that with the increasing women’s income, usually they are less concerned about the price, which could be instead by quality. Therefore, in order to meet some low-income consumers’ demands, Hungry Jack Easy Mash’d Instant Potatoes could be launched the different series of produces with different price. For example: the packaging of different weights, the packaging of different flavors. In addition, it also could organize some promotional activities for product discount. While focusing on the high-income consumers, it could improve the products’ quality, such as using better raw materials. All of these are to bring benefits to consumers.
