Southwest airline friendly and cooperative staff was encourage to entertain passengers by combining jokes in safety instruction to make them pleasant and with not allocating seat prior to arrival which left customer with choice to choose set they want and cut valuable staff time and efforts. It was first airline to introduce online booking system with ticket less travel and become leader in airline industry with reputation of safest and friendliest airline in skies.
Reason behind success of Southwest Airline:
Although many airline companies (so their senior management) accept the importance of employee's contribution for the success of any organization but still they use old tactics of reducing employees pay to cut cost and boost profit, which is against to the very basic principle of economic and business of linking the performance with incentives to motivate. (Pilarski's, 2007).
But Southwest understand its employee's importance and therefore provided them stable working environment where fun loving attitude is encouraged and where opportunities for learning and growth given are equal. Southwest airline has various ways to recognize its employees with performance based incentives and learning opportunities and environment where hard work and caring spirit within employees recognized and employees are considered as greatest strength.
According to Dr Gittel ( ) Southwest airline, despite of running in the airline industry which lost billions of dollar consistently southwest airline has maintain profitability with 10% to 15% from 31 years with highest market share than combine share of all US airline by creating competitive advantage through motivation, team work and coordination among employees.
Airline Industry after 9/11:
They key to continuous success of southwest airline, since past four decade and in conditions when after 9/11 airline companies were begging for money and protection from bankruptcy with firing of thousand of employees, southwest airline keep all its employees from working and they have done so by having emphasis on high performance relationship which is key reason of its 34 years of consecutive profitability by having emphasis on shared goal, shared knowledge and mutual respect.
One example of achieving success through effective and efficient performance management system is when 9/11 cause unavoidable damage with its profound effect on airline industry especial as mention earlier southwest airlines share price also fall and everyone was worried about future.

strategy after 9/11:
At this point according to Laura Wright the vice president and chief financial officer of Southwest airline and southwest decide to cope with this critical condition by assessing its business to identify those measure which matters most, those which drive the value of shareholders and put them under four aggregate metrics with a name of (SWA) Magic number and then create a company wide program title named as knowing you score and what they did is they posted the actual measure with targets on scoreboard s and ensure its effectiveness by linking it with employees incentive bonus plans.
