Chapter Five Analysis and Discussion

This chapter mainly tends to analyze and discuss the vagueness of netspeak from the perspective oflinguistic adaptation theory. The chapter begins with the generation of netspeak vagueness, aiming toexplore the main factors that impact the vagueness of netspeak. Then, the thesis aims to describe andexplain the adaptability of netspeak vagueness from the perspective of linguistic adaptation theory. The partmainly focuses on the adaptability of netspeak vagueness based on four angles of investigation: contextualcorrelates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and salience of theadaptability processes. Finally, the pragmatic functions of netspeak vagueness are discussed.

5.1 The Generation of Netspeak Vagueness

Vagueness is one of the significant natures of language, existing in all languages in the world. As anew kind of recombination of human language and non-linguistic symbols, the language used in Internetcommunication also has the property of vagueness. When there are unambiguous and strict rules for thelimits of things themselves scientifically, these limits are considered to be precise. However, the degree andrange of things show the vague limits in daily life because it is difficult to distinguish precisely a thing fromothers. Thus in daily internet communication it is not necessary for people to use very accurate linguisticsymbols to communicate with others. At the same time, the use of vague language, in naturalcommunicative contexts, complies with the law of language communication that the improvement ofhuman communication is embedded not only in the precise thinking of human beings but also in the vaguethinking to a great extent, so does vague netspeak.However, netspeak is a new language form, which differs from traditional language used in physicalcontext in all levels of linguistic structure, such as code, style, utterance-building ingredients, discoursesand linguistic principle of structuring. Therefore, the generation of vagueness in language used in virtualworld is different from the generation of vagueness in language used in physical world. Channell believesthe vagueness in natural language happens through vague addictives, vagueness by choice of vague words,and vagueness by implicature. Through observing examples collected, the vagueness of netspeak is mainlytriggered by the following factors: hedges, vague words and vagueness by language variation. Based on theobservation and analysis to the netspeak corpus, the frequency of these three ways and their percentage, aregiven as in Table 1.
