luences the patterns of usage ofpoliteness strategies used in the Cape No. 7.As a social phenomenon, politeness is universal, but it is also culture-specific.According to Mill (2011:33), ‘different communities construct different norms forwhat is appropriate or inappropriate; in other words, what counts as polite orimpolite.’ Therefore, as a speaking community in the southern part of Taiwan, thetown of Hengchun actually constitutes a community with particular politenesslanguage practices and styles. However, it is well known that yet Taiwan is aninseparable part of China, it has been separated from China for almost 100 years. It isassumed that it may form its subculture of China. Therefore it will be meaningful toexplore the extent that the patterns of politeness reflect their allegiance to the Chineseculture through the movie Cape No. 7 which is claimed to be the true reflection ofTaiwanese life.

CONCLUSION

The purpose of this research is to find out the features of the politeness strategies inCape No. 7 and the influence of social variables of power, social distance and genderon the usage of politeness strategies by the characters of Cape No. 7 . And to whatextent the patterns of politeness reflect their allegiance to the Chinese culture.Through the analysis of dialogues according to different social relationships based onBrown and Levinson’s politeness theory and the examination of the frequency ofpoliteness strategies in the dialogues, the following observations are made.First, it is found that positive politeness is the most favored politeness strategy inthe community, followed by off record strategy, bald on record strategy as well asnegative politeness strategy respectively, which shows that the community is apositive-oriented society where people emphasize harmony and friendliness.Second, people in the community from different walks of life like the elders andthe youngers, the superiors and the subordinates, the locals and the outsiders as wellas the females and the males have their different preference of politeness strategiesand their choice of politeness strategies are influenced by social factors such as power,social distance and gender. As for the effect of power on the choice of politenessstrategies, it is found that the usage of politeness strategies between the charactersdiffers according to the power ranking they assume. More specifically, when choosingpoliteness strategies, the more powerful speakers like the elders and the superiors whohave higher social status or rank in the movie take on the more interactive role whilethe less powerful interactants as the youngers and the subordinates take on the lesspowerful interactive role.
