1.1 Brief Introduction to David Lodge
David Lodge has been a part of the British literary
history for more than half a century. He is a prolific author of thirty works of novels, monograms, collection of
essays. Pursuing a dual career of writing fiction and studying literature theories, Lodge has published books of each kind in alteration. He is famous for presenting a vivid picture of the academic life through a series of campus novels like Changing Place, Small World, and Nice Work. Lodge is also a prominent literary critic in Britain who contributes to the notion on the establishment of the “the poetics of fiction”. In the recent decades, the focus of his literature study has transferred to the study of “the practice of writing” and the lives in writing.

1.2 Brief Introduction to Author, Author
The first literary figure Lodge presented in the form of novel is Henry James. Published in 2004, the novel Author, Author centers on Henry James’s five-year campaign in theatre in 1890s and his friendship with George Du Maurier. The latter is the writer of the most popular novel at that age Tribly. Although Lodge thought this novel to be one of his best (Perkin, Tradition 148), the novel received highly mixed reviews upon its publication. The story starts from the deathbed of Henry James, flashes back to 30 years ago and slowly develops to the deathbed again, finishes with an authorial interpolation. The frame story in Part One and Part Four is what happened around Henry’s last days, and the main story in Part Two and Part Three is about his middle years in 1980s and 1990s. With Henry James’s friendship with George Du Maurier as its backbone, this novel dipped well into the ups and downs of James’ literary career after his middle years and the intangled, complex relationship with his various acquaintances and people around, especially, his friend Constance Fennimore Cooper, his sister Alice James, theater managers and actors, and some contemporary writers.
