Chapter 2 Literature Review
In this chapter, it mainly includes three parts. The first part is about vocabulary teaching, which involves the definition of vocabulary, implication of knowing a word, and the organization of word knowledge in mind as well as principles of vocabulary teaching. The second part refers to Schema Theory, and it involves the definition of schema, the classifications of schemata, the characteristics of schemata and the functions of schemata. And the last part is about the previous study of Schema Theory and vocabulary teaching abroad and in China.
2.1 Vocabulary teaching
This part mainly refers to the theory about vocabulary teaching, which involves the definition of vocabulary, implication of knowing a word, the organization of word knowledge in mind and principles of vocabulary teaching. In the 19th century, a word is defined as the smallest unit of language, which means the vocabulary makes up the phrases, the phrases compose the sentences, and the sentences form the text or course. Sapir (1921) points out that the word is the smallest, the most complete and the most independent semantic unit. Bloomfield (1933) holds that a word is a minimum free form. According to Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary (7th edition), vocabulary refers to the words making up language or the words known and used by people. According to the modern lexicology, it tends to use the decomposition method to define a word, that is, a word is the combination of the specific features of the morphology, the syntax and the semantics.
