ngACs when they are doing reading exercises. In terms of the significance of the research, there are few people who haveconducted a study about the investigation and application of ACs in English RI insenior high school up to now. Even though there are a few scholars who have donesome researches on ACs, they have just studied ACs from different linguisticperspectives, some famous scholars like Yuan Surong (2013), Zhang Yisheng (2000),Duan Yina (2005), Nie Xiaoli (2009). It is worth mentioning that some of thesescholars have only studied the ACs in Chinese language except Yuan Surong who hasstudied ACs in both English and Chinese, it has been elaborated in detail in hismonograph entitled “A Comparative Study of Adverbial Conjunctions in Chinese andEnglish”. However, all these scholars haven’t related ACs with English teaching, especially for English RI. Therefore, this study will make up this defect in theacademic fields. Through the process of filling this blank, it will put forward someconstructive suggestions for further study of ACs in English Language Teaching(abbreviated as ELT). Meanwhile, the results of this study are also plausible, becausethey have been verified by a lot of investigations and experiments.

Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Adverbial Conjunctions
The phenomenon of ACs existing in English language has been recognized bymany scholars at home and abroad, yet the terms they adopt for ACs are disparate.Larson (1985), Schwarz (1999), Chalker (2001: 5), and Johanessen (2005) proposethe term “Correlative Adverbs”. They claim that Correlative Adverbs refer to suchsemi-fixed phrases as “either...or...”, “neither...nor...”, “both...and...”, “not only...butalso...”, “whether...or...” etc. Meanwhile, they have done in-depth researches on suchphrases.Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman (1999) come up with “ConjunctiveAdverbials” as one of the three types of logic connectors. They are “lexicalexpressions that may add little or no propositional content by themselves but theyserve to specify the relationships among sentences in oral or written discourse, thereby leading the listener/reader to the feeling that the sentences ‘hanging together’or make sense” (1999: 519). In addition, Cheryl Wei-yu Chen (2006: 113) also usesthe term “Conjunctive Adverbials” in his academic paper.Halliday, M. A. K. & Hasan, R. (1976: 230) coin “Conjunctive Adverbs” to referto ACs. They claim that “Conjunctive (discourse) adjuncts are those which relate theclause to the preceding text” (Halliday, 1994: 49). Additionally, they have stipulatedthe benchmark for judging conjunctions: “given a particular semantic relation whichcan operate conjunctively, then any expression of that relation, with or without ademonstrative or other reference item, will be considered to fall within the category ofconjunction.” (Halliday, 1976: 230).

This chapter mainly consists of three parts: the definition of readingcomprehension, classification of reading activities as well as the current readingmodels in senior high school. They will be elaborated in more detail in the followingsection.Reading comprehension plays a significant role in second language learning. Inthe academic field, there are many famous scholars who have already conductedresearches on it at home and abroad; in the classroom teaching, most of the teachersand student
