摘要:With language teaching gradually entering into the post-method era,the research focuson the relationship between mother tongue and foreign language teaching has attracted greatresearch attention.
Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Defining Code and Code-switching
Speaking of code-switching, it is impossible to know what it is until we have knownwhat code is at the first place. According to Wardhaugh (2000:86), code refers to “any kind ofsystem that two or more people employ for communication”. When people communicate witheach other, they need to select a particular code. It can be a language or a variety of alanguage, such as a dialect, but can also be any nonverbal symbol as long as it is able toconvey a message. When a particular code is decided on, there is no need to stick to it all thetime. “People can and should shift, as the need arises, from one code to another” (Wardhaugh,2000:86).As to the question what is code-switching, researchers have defined this term differentlyfor their own use according to their research purposes, methodology and their understandingof this phenomenon. Therefore, the fact that we are confronted now is that there is not aunified definition for this term. But concluded from the existing research works, He and Yuput it: “the definition of code-switching generally falls into three types: the first typemaintains the difference between code-switching and code-mixing; the second type does notmaintain the distinction between the two; and the third type does not take a stance as to thedistinction between them” (He & Yu, 2001: 85).

2.2 Classifying Code-switching
Researchers have spared enormous efforts to identify different types of code-switching,because it is believed that such classification helps to reveal the nature and subtle differenceof code-switching in terms of its structure and function. Therefore, while trying to classifydifferent types of code-switching, the researchers have taken the language structure andlanguage functions into consideration. One of the pioneers in this field is Poplack, who divides code-switching into followingthree types from the syntactical perspective: inter-sentential switching, tag-switching andintra-sentential switching. By inter-sentential switching, Poplack means the type ofcode-switching that takes place at the boundary between two sentences or clauses, with eachsentence or clause belonging to a different language system. Inter-sentential switching maytake place between turns and this type of code-switching requires the least integration ascode-switching happens between sentences or clauses. The second type of code-switching istag-switching, which is inserted into a sentence or a clause and demands little integration ofthe two languages. According to Poplack (1980: 598), the insertion of a tag to an utterancehas virtually no ramifications for the rest of the sentence. This is because tags have nosyntactic constraints; they can be moved freely and inserted almost anywhere in a discoursewithout violating any grammatical rules.
