Chapter FourRESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This part which constitutes the main body of this thesis aims at exploring thelinguistic forms and features of the corpus of UK, US, Australia and Canadarespectively about TCM. The three functions of Wordsmith6.0--Wordlist,Concordance as well as Keywords are applied to examine the linguistic features indetails. Then the comparative study of the four countries towards the same subjectwill also be conducted for revealing the hidden ideologies behind the overt texts.

4.1 The corpus of UK (CUK)

The corpus for UK is a self-constructed corpus, consisting of 67traditional-Chinese medicine-related reports. Each text file is labeled by date of issue. Forexample, 061120 means the November 20, 2006.These reports are selected out ofsections including News, Weekends, Features, etc. And the media chosen are: TheTimes, The Independent, The Guardian, and Daily Mail/Mail on Sunday.It can be seen from Table 4.2 that words of the highest frequency are thefunctional words which definitely have no significance to the analysis of the contentsof the texts. Therefore, the function of stoplist is used to get rid of those words.However, still some words appear which seem irrelevant to the study such as where,what, when, over, then, etc., thus a manual removal of these words is made in thefollowing part and the top 60 of the most frequently appeared is demonstrated asTable 4.3.As suggested in the table-4.3, among the words in the list “Chinese”,“Medicine”, “Traditional“ are in the first, the second and the fifth position, and thetimes they appear in the texts are 62, 62, 50 respectively, indicating that the chosentexts are in consistent with the subject of the corpus for Traditional Chinese Medicine,(The abbreviation of TCM in the list also shows that the concept of TCM alreadybeen generally accepted by the mass of the UK.) Then it is found that the threetypical therapies of TCM stand out from the list, and then the author wants to knowhow the three treatment methods are perceived? Therefore, concordance lines areneeded to explore the question further.
