CONCLUSION

As a measurement of translation, annotations have been utilized widely with a longhistory. But with the emergence of various translation theories, there are extensivearguments for using annotations. In the professional circle, there exist two differentviews: one view considers the issue from the perspective of positive side. Because ofthe functions of annotations, the employment of this measure should be spread in morewild range. The other view judges the issue from the perspective of negative side, thattranslators are difficult to handle the techniques of annotations. In the translatingprocess, if the translator could not control the subordinate position of annotations fromthe aspects of quantity and content, these details will distract the theme of the wholework. The scholars with this view have mentioned that this phenomenon is spread insome translated works with abundant knowledge, especially literary works. Meanwhile,with the developments of translation theories, scholars have agreed increasingly that inthe translating process, the position of translator could not be ignored, and annotationsis one of the proper ways to express the existence of translator. By these reasons, themainstream view is that the functions and effects of annotations should be attractedmore professional attentions. And then, scholars have begun to study the principles ofmaking annotations and the theories of governing annotations. According to thissituation, scholars have published abundant of articles to present their views for therelationship between annotations and translators, and how to judge the effects ofannotations to the translated version of a work. To study the issues from the neworientation, the present thesis also attempts to expound the issues with two theoriesfrom different areas: thick translation from translation area and paratext from rhetorical area by studying Dan Brown's novel Angels & Demons. The thick translation theory ofAppiah could explain why a translated work need annotations did. Actually, the reasonis that the audiences of TT might understand profoundly and respect the culture from ST.The general principles of thick translation are focusing the original authors' intentions,respecting the cultural differences, and emphasizing context. But then, he has nevermentioned the specific principles of how to make annotations. Therefore, the presentthesis has provided some suggestions for this aspect. And, because of the specificcharacteristics of this translated work, the thesis will utilize the translator's footnote, onetype of annotations, to analyze and expound thick translation theory.
