Chapter OneINTRODUCTION
1.1 Need for the Study
Today, the whole world has been turbulent and unsafe again, with more and morebloody conflicts among different civilizations. The reason is the lack ofcommunications between the diversified cultures. 'Babel', a word known very well topeople who are quite familiar with Bible, derives from a biblical allusion that for fear ofhuman's concerted power, God disrupts mortals' efforts in building the tower for Babel, the stairway to heaven, by making them to speak different languages. According to theallusion, 'Babel' has become a term representing difficulties and obstacles in thecommunicating process. Since then, the human
history in the biblical sense witnesses, humans trying to conquer difficulties posed after the disruption of the Tower of Babel, and to create an accessible way for communication. Translation thus emerged becauseof the demands for communication. But in the process, the most difficult issue fortranslators is the cultural difference issue. Because of the diversified regional customsand social statues, there are probably obstacles for one culture understanding another.Since then, for experienced translators, they used to keep the original culturalcharacteristics for respecting authors or to transform the original culture in targetaudiences' views. For the two different ways, there exist both merits and demerits. Afterall, target audiences will probably misunderstand a version by keeping the originalcultural characteristics. On the other hand, the way, translators transforming the originalculture to adapt the target audiences' reading customs, will probably lose the essences oforiginal culture in the process. Thus, annotations are an effort for filling in the gap.Recently, the functions and efforts of annotations are attracting attention from more andmore scholars in the translation field. A theory, arousing a more widespread agreementfor years, is that annotations in the translated target text (hereinafter 'TT' for short)should be considered the necessary supplements for translating strange and obscuremeaning from one culture to another. This
thesis will select Dan Brown's novel, Angels&Demons, as a representative case to expound the significant meanings and functionsof annotations for translation under the theoretical framework of 'thick translation' and'Paratexts'.

1.2 Significance of the Study
Annotation boasts a long history. Interestingly, in both the west and China, theearliest examples of annotations are found in biblical writing, with translated Buddhistscriptures in China during the period of the Three Kingdoms and vernacular translationsof Bible. However, since annotations serve mainly an auxiliary function, being placedoutside the main body of text, offering annotations have long been taken for granted orthought as unnecessary in translation. Until recently annotation has begun to arouseacademic attention. For the modern translation theoretical field, there are dominantviews that annotations are really necessary as the supplementary of translation, especially for translation among entirely different civilizations. But scholars have notcome to an agreement on principles of where the translator should put an annotation inthe target text (hereinafter 'TT' for short) and how the translator insert and producethese annotations. On the one hand, they consider annotations as an effort to fill in thegap among the diff
