 this  chapter,  the  collected  data  will  be  described  briefly  first,  which  is  the foundation  of  the  latter  analysis.  Then  the  representative  data  will  be  discussed respectively  within  the  theoretical  framework  of  RB  Model  which  is  put  forward  to illustrate the detailed process of the interpretation of English verbal humor. The data for analysis  in  this  thesis  are  selected  from  the  humorous  talk  show  Conan  in  which  the English  verbal  humor  are  abundant.  Due  to  the  detailed  analysis  for  verbal  humor  in Conan, it also aims to present some characteristics of verbal humor of Conan.  

5.1 Data Analysis  

As  what  have  been  mentioned above, classification is  hard to  define all  the time. Koestler   classified humor into situational and verbal humor, which is widely accepted by scholars (Koestler, 1993). Whether verbal humor?s form is written or spoken, they can make people laugh by using language. In some sitcom, in order to make audiences feel funny, the producer tends to make full use of verbal humor to make humor so as to attract audiences? attention.  According to  different  pragmatic  function, it  can  be divided  into different kinds of verbal humor. Spanakaki gave a further classification of verbal humor, that  is,  linguistic  humor,  cultural  humor  and  universal  humor  (Spanakaki,  2007). However,  according  to  the  different  functions  of  the  selected  verbal  humor  and  the unique  style  of  talk  show,  the  data  includes  82  lines  of  humorous  utterance  from  20 episodes of Conan, which has been summarized into three categories, universal, politic and  cultural  verbal  humor,  and  then  the  universal  verbal  humor  mainly  includes  two kinds of sub-categories, satire and fun. In terms of this criterion, the 82 pieces of English verbal humor have been listed in Table 5-1.

Conclusion  

Humor can be found here and there in daily life, and it makes people?s life is full of a bundle  of  laughs.  The  study  of  humor  had  a  long-standing  history  and  made  great achievements.  The  most  traditional  studies  on  humor  laid  a  solid  foundation  for  the further  study.  Although it  is  inevitable  that there are  some deficiencies of the  earliest studies on humor, it still paves the way for the development of research. Because of the frequency of occurring in life, the pragmatic studies on humor become more and more prevalent.
