ting the definition of humor. Humor, the English word, came from the Latin word which means “fluid” or “liquid” (Attardo, 1994:6). It means the fluids of the human body, which involves four fluids, namely, blood, phlegm, choler and melancholy. In ancient times, it was generally believed that the four fluids determined people?s physical appearance, character and temperament. In other words, the physical and mental states of people can be easily affected by the balance condition of four fluids (Xiang, 2008:56/37). Afterwards, humor has got other means which meant an odd, uncommon and eccentric character that was laughed at, and made others laugh (Hu, 1987:2-3). However, humor gradually is separated from its original meaning. In China, Lin Yutang was the first person translated humor into Chinese “you mo” in the 1920s and from then on it was widely recognized by Chinese scholars and ordinary people (Lin, 1994).

2.2 Review of Study on Verbal Humor
The most traditional studies undoubtedly made great contributions to the forthcoming researches on humor. Scholars are appealed to study humor from different viewpoints like psychology, philosophy, sociology, etc. Humor is prevalent in human daily life, and is conveyed by way of spoken or written language in most cases. Thus verbal humor plays a dominate role in the research of humor and the research has never stopped. At the same time, many linguists devoted themselves to the study of verbal humor. However, until the end of 1970s, linguistic studies on humor took up a significant position in numerous researches on verbal humor (Attardo, 1997: 395). This section will provide the previous studies on verbal humor from linguistic aspect both abroad and domestic.
