 In  1977,  Bandura  first  proposed  the  concept  of  self-efficacy  in  his  published article “Self-efficacy: Toward a Unifying Theory of Behavioral Change”. Afterwards, different definitions are provided by scholars. The following Table below is to present  definitions on self-efficacy given by different scholars.    From  the  Table  above,  it  is  known  that  these  definitions  are  basically  in consistence with each other and they all emphasize the distinct feature of self-efficacy: domain-specific. Individual’s self-efficacy differs in various domains or situations.      In  academic  setting,  Zimmerman  (1995)  defines  self-efficacy  as  individual judgments  of  one’s  ability  to  organize  and  execute  courses  of  actions  to  attain designated  types  of  educational  performances.  Ehrman  et  al.  (2003)  define self-efficacy  as  the  degree  to  which  the  individual  thinks  he  or  she  possesses  the ability to deal with the learning difficulties and challenges. In  this  thesis,  non-English  major  ethnic  minority  college  students’  English self-efficacy is studied, so it is defined as their beliefs in capability to organize and execute courses of action in accomplishing tasks in English study.  In  order  to  have  a  better  understanding  towards  self-efficacy,  it  is  necessary  to clarify some similar concepts in the following section.

The  descriptive  Table  4.1  shows  that  the  non-English  major  ethnic  minority students are experiencing low self-efficacy in English study.
