1 Introduction
1.1 Background Information of the Study
English, as the lingua franca, plays an indispensable role in economic and culturalexchanges in the world. The globalization of English makes the world a village and Englishculture influences every corner in the world. People from different places can talk the sametopic, see the same film, sing the same pop songs, etc. The globalization offers a stage forintercultural communication of different countries. With the promotion of globalization,English is given much attention and being taught as a very important discipline in manynon-English speaking nations. China is such a country that has the world’s largest number ofnon-native English speakers, there are more than “250 million English learners, outnumberingthe entire population of the USA” (Chen Meilin & Hu Xiaoxiong, 2006).Meanwhile, the globalization of English results in its nativization, which is a renewedprocess with combining English with local cultural codes, a great variety of Englishescarrying their particular cultures. English became World Englishes, which consists of a largenumber of English varieties, such as Singaporean English, Indian English, China English andJapan English, etc. In addition, “with the diffusion of and resultant innovations in Englisharound the world, universally acceptable standards are absent” (Kachru, 2005).The variety of English used by Chinese is generally called “China English”, whichdevelops from both internationalization and indigenization of Anglo-American English. ChinaEnglish has the normative English as its core but integrates with Chinese symbolic culturalconnotation. Ge Chuangui (1980) put forward the term “China English” for the first time, headvocates that it is more expressive when translators use China English expressions to conveythe unique Chinese ideas and phenomena of Chinese culture, such as “xiucai” (秀才),“FourBooks”(四书), “Five Classics” (五经) and so on. China English, both as a symbolic andsocial process, largely carries the following cultural values and social meanings, withgeographic, historical, social and institutional, political, ideological, and folk cultureReferences (Jin Huikang, 2001).

1.2 Significance and Purpose of the thesis
Intercultural communication base on equal interaction between participants, and thebasic condition for participants’ intercultural competence is cultural awareness of bothcultures. Therefore, as the main roles of intercultural communication in China, English majorsare responsible for carrying forward Chinese culture. Chinese English majors are influencedby the western culture embodied by English language, which may lead to their indifference orignorance to native culture. Indeed, many English learners have the “Chinese culturalaphasia”, which manifests itself when English learners are aphasic of expressing Chinesecultural things in English. It is the dangerous signal of losing national cultural identity, whichalso weakens the intercultural communication effectiveness to some degree. Thus, tointroduce more Chinese cultural contents in cultural teaching syllabus of English education isurgently needed.
