ignificance of the Study
With China’s reform and joining WTO, the students’ English level becomesincreasingly important in nation-building and personal development. Their level ofvocabulary reflects their level of English. Vocabulary ability directly affects a person’slistening, reading, writing and translation capabilities. Only grasp the sufficientvocabulary, so that we can understand and read others articles, and then we can freelyexpress our ideas. On the country, communication difficulties and obstacles weremostly caused by insufficient vocabulary. Wilkins said that “without grammar verylittle can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed”. Krashen (1989)claimed that “a large vocabulary is essential for the mastery of a language. Secondlanguage acquirers know this: they carry dictionaries with them, not grammar books,and regularly report that lack of vocabulary is a major problem.” And thenZimmerman(1997) said, “Vocabulary is central to language and is of criticalimportance to typical learner.”


Chapter Two Literature Review


Vocabulary is an important problem if a learner wants to study language andcommunicate with others. To study a language well, the first step is to study itsvocabulary. There is no doubt that every learner wants to remember a large quantityof vocabulary in mind to understand the language better. So at abroad some linguistslike Nation, Coady, Huckin, Nagy, Herman, Laufer, Hulstijn and so on became therepresentatives of vocabulary acquisition. This chapter will have an overview ofliterature in the relevant researches related to vocabulary learning. And some relevanttheories will be presented to help understand incidental vocabulary acquisition and therelationship with intentional learning.


2.1 Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition Theory (IVA)
In the 20thcentury 80 years, some foreign researchers studied incidentalvocabulary acquisition in extensive teaching (Nagy 1987, Krashen 1989, Laufer 1998),and then gradually formed the theory of Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition. Once theIncidental vocabulary acquisition theory was put forth, it could be widely applied tothe teaching and research in foreign language vocabulary acquisition.


2.1.1 Definition of Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition
“Incidental vocabulary acquisition” can also be called “ incidentallearning”(Du Shi-chun,2005), “ incidental vocabulary learning”(Liu Bo ru,2004) or“ incidental acquisition”(Zhai Li xia,2002). It is a kind of foreign language acquisitiontheory that emerges from the foreign country in the last 20 years. As a matter of fact,Laufer’s definition about incidental vocabulary acquisition has been acknowledgeduniversally. Laufer (1989) believes that incidental vocabulary acquisition is oppositeto intentional language learning. In intentional learning, the learners have a specificand clear purpose of learning vocabulary through exercises or activities centering on vocabulary. Incidental vocabulary acquisition is the process of acquiring vocabularyincidentally in other learning tasks such as reading articles, listening to English songsand other activities. (Gai Shu-hua, 2003)
