2. Literature Review


2.1 Studies on Metaphors
Practiced by the ancient-Greeks, the study of metaphor has a history of more than twothousand years in the west. Taken as a whole, over its long historical process, metaphor hasbeen regarded as a sense of concept of rhetoric and poetics. Until the 20th century, the natureof metaphor study started to change significantly. The rise of linguistic turn and cognitivescience has a huge impact on it. From the original field of rhetoric and poetics tocontemporary studies, metaphor spans linguistics, philosophy, cognitive science, and plays anincreasingly significant role even in natural science, computer science and other fields.Metaphor has also gradually evolved into a ubiquitous and comprehensive theoretical concept,from a kind of figure of speech, a form of literature, a poetry--theory terminology, a kind oflanguage phenomenon, and a way of thinking.It has been 2000 years from the time of Aristotle to this day, and metaphor has beenregarded as perennial topic in the research field of foreign academia (especially in linguistics).In the 1970s, metaphor entered into an era of “metaphor fever”. By contrast, the study ofmetaphor in our country started relatively late. Metaphor is a window of interaction amongcognitive linguistics, second language acquisition, psycholinguistics and other theories. Andit is the platform for humans to understand themselves and the relation between language andthe world. Metaphor is no longer simply understood as a kind of language rhetoric method,but more as a means of human cognition and thinking.

2.2 Metaphoric Competence
Metaphoric competence is the concept that connects cognitive metaphor and appliedresearch. Metaphoric competence includes not only metaphor acquisition, metaphoridentification, but also the ability to use a metaphor, rich imagination and creative thinkingability.Metaphoric competence is a symbol of the conceptual fluency as cognitive ability in theunderlying structure, and its development level is one of the important factors that determinewhether a learner can skillfully use a foreign language or not. During English languageteaching and learning, it is equally important to develop the students’ ability of metaphor,their language ability and communication ability.At present, the controversial problem in metaphoric competence study is the relationshipbetween language level, cognitive ability and metaphoric competence. Some foreignresearches made a discussion among language level, metaphor interpretation and metaphorrelationship.
