Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Research on Context
It is commonly believed that Poland anthropologist and linguist Malinowski proposed the term “context” firstly. According to him, the meaning of the discourse is not from the idea of containing it, but from its relationship with the context of the discourse. So we could know that utterance and situation interacted with each other. People usually judged the meaning of the words by its context. Without context, any word is meaningless. He also proposed the term of “culture context”, but he didn’t recognize the linguistic context in his study. Halliday (1976) inherited and developed the viewpoint of Malinowski and Firth. He gave a further study to the types of context factors and its position in grammar system. At the same time, he proposed the term “register”. According to his research and founding, when context changed, verbal language and written language could change along it. Generally, from small scale, context is a phrase or a longer word or text that appears before and / or after a word or phrase. From large scale, the range of context is expanded to the setting, background or even the culture with which the utterance is associated. Taking previous definitions into account, the author adopts the definition of context from a broad sense.
