Chapter 1 Introduction
Reading is one of the basic skills in language learning and junior high school is a crucial period for English learners. The cultivation of reading habits and reading skills in this stage exerts an essential influence on the further English study. This chapter proposes the purpose and the significance of the study through analyzing the present situation and problems of English reading teaching in junior high school and the requirements of the English curriculum standard in 2011, and then a brief introduction of the structure of the

1.1 Background
English reading is attached great importance in English teaching in junior high school. Take Dalian Liaoning province as an example, in the Senior High School Entrance Examination in Dalian in 2015, the score of reading is 44, which accounts about 31.4% of the total, in addition, cloze which relates closely to reading skill occupies 31.4% as well. Consequently, reading takes up at least half of the total score in the examination. However, generally speaking, most students can’t get satisfactory reading achievements although they have spent much time on it. And the situation is almost the same in other places. The reading teaching of many English teachers is mainly based on the language points of the target reading article. Some teachers even hold that an article is the combination of words, phrases and sentences. If you have mastered the words, the phrases and the grammar, you can understand the article and answer the reading questions. In such method, teachers and students pay too much attention to the words and grammar and neglect analyzing the structure, the theme and the culture background from the perspective of the whole article to catch the deep meaning that the authors intend to convey to the readers. Students just understand the literal meaning of articles rather than the true essence of reading. Some teachers do teach the reading techniques, but they are test-oriented, whose primary concern is to obtain scores in the least time. The teachers ask students to read the questions before reading an article and then look through the first sentence of each paragraph in that it usually tells the main idea of each paragraph.
