摘要:This paper will attempt to investigate minority nationality preparatory students'attitudes towards the English language. As we know, an English learner's attitude hasmuch to do with his English learning.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Rationale of the research
Today, most of the English speakers in the world are normative speakers. Theywill greatly influence the development of English language. China has the largestpopulation in the world. According to official statistics, it is observed that the mainlandof China has the largest English-learning population in the world (Bolton, 2003). At thesame time, with every passing day, an ever-increasing number of Chinese speakers ofEnglish are added to the multi-million community of Chinese-English bilinguals in themainland (Deterding, 2006).The Chinese students have to leam English as a foreignlanguage when entering the middle school.

今天,世界上大部分讲英语的规范性扬声器。它们将极大地影响英语的发展。中国拥有世界上最多的人口。据官方统计,据观察,中国内地拥有最大的英语学习世界上人口(博尔顿,2003年)。与此同时,每过一天,中国讲英语的人数不断增加,加入到多万中国大陆的中英双语社区(Deterding,2006年)。中国学生LEAM英语作为一门外语进入中学时。


In some regions or cities, students areallowed to start to leam English in the primary school, even in the kindergarten.However, some minority students,especially those from the minority nationalityregions, cannot get as equally proficient English knowledge as their Han nationalitypeers. Of course, there are complex reasons for this phenomenon. China's governmenthas been trying its best to improve the situation. Setting up preparatory departments inuniversities and colleges is one of the counter-measures to help the students keep pacewith the normally learning process.

在一些地区或城市,学生被允许开始学会英语在小学,甚至在幼儿园。然而,一些少数民族学生,尤其是来自少数民族地区,得不到同样精通英语知识作为他们的汉族同行。当然,造成这种现象的原因是复杂的。中国政府一直在尽力改善这种情况。准备部门设置在大学和学院是一个应对措施来帮助学生跟上正常的学习过程。


Yet the problem is that after one or two years of learning in the preparatorydepartment, many English-learners from minority nationalities are still far from beingproficient either in comprehensive or practical skills or in both. Some students even losetheir interest and hate English-learning. Despite the much time and great efforts exertedon English learning, they still feel it is too difficult for them to achieve the desired aimsor goals.


What causes such a linguistic phenomenon? How to solve the problem? Theseare the questions besetting language researchers. Most previous researches on English learning concentrated on some objective factors,such as the teacher's roles,teachingmethodologies, learning styles and methods. However, little attention has been paid tothe learners' attitudes towards English learning. Furthermore, only a few of the studieshave been devoted to minority students. Therefore, an investigation into languageattitude, especially the minority nationality students' attitude towards English leaning,will provide a new perspective for the English study,


1. 2 Purpose and significance of this study
This paper will attempt to investigate minority nationality preparatory students'attitudes towards the English language. As we know, an English learner's attitude hasmuch to do with his English learning. If the learner likes the culture of the targetlanguage and is eager to know it, his attitude tends to be positive, so does his motivation.If his attitude is negative, the learner's motivation to leam a language will be reduced.So far, few studies have been done on preparatory students' attitude towards L2 learningat home. Therefore, this project is of profound theoretical and practical significance.
