Thatduck-filling way of teaching is no longer match the call of the 21stcentury.In the aspect of learning strategies, the study of language learning strategies hasbeen a closely concerned topic in psychology and pedagogy in the last two decades, andit has attracted applied linguists’ interests. Learning strategies are to explain howlanguage learners acquire the second language. Studies have tended to focus on strategieswhen learners perform particular tasks. The study on learning strategies under bilingualinstruction does not only contribute to interpret EFL learners’ individual difference, butalso has a great influence on second language teaching as well as its construct theories.Learners’ language learning strategies are one of the key dimensions for successfullanguage learning (Su, 2005). Pedagogical SignificanceIn this paper, the application of the bilingual instruction in Nanjing University ofAeronautics and Astronautics has been studied. Although the bilingual instruction hasalready been carried out in some courses in Nanjing University of Aeronautics andAstronautics, the effects and outcome have never been analyzed and studied. Besides,this study tried to figure out effective learning strategies. Therefore, this study might behelpful for those students to learn English more effectively and contributes to theimprovement of the bilingual instruction in NUAA.What is more, as required by the Ministry of Education on College English teachingreform, College English course is not only a course for language learning, it is also acourse to broaden language learners’ view, as well a media to know other subject fields.The nature of a language, which is to communicate, is supposed to be considered andreflected in designing a College English course. The bilingual instruction is just that kindof teaching methodology. It is a way of improving learners’ English competence byteaching other courses. Language is only a media for students to learn subject content aswell as the language itself. This empirical study is to study the actual implementation ofbilingual instruction in classroom. Therefore, it could provide empirical evidence forCollege English teaching reform.


1.3 Needs for the Study研究必需

The successful experience of CBI abroad has shown second language can be used asa media to teach subject content as well as improve the language itself at the mean time.According to the requirements from National Ministry of Education, bilingual instructionin college aims at improving college students’ English proficiency without increasingclass hours. Since it was experimentally applied in college English teaching from 2001,the bilingual instruction has been a fiercely disputed topic in the circle of Englishteaching. However, literature about empirical studies on the changes of EFL learners’learning strategies in the process of the bilingual instruction in the context of collegeEnglish teaching in China is few.In Requirements of College English Curriculum issued by the Ministry of Educationin October 2007, the property of college English teaching is clearly put forward.
