he pillars of the trillion dollar economies of Western Europe. The UK was the first country in the world to industrialise in the 18th and 19th centuries and for much of the 19th century played an important role in the global economy. According to the data from IMF (2008), it is currently the world's sixth largest by nominal GDP and the seventh largest by purchasing power parity. Some of key Economic indicators of United Kingdom are:
GDP: $ 2, 674 Billion (2008)
GDP growth: -0.4% (Q3 2009) and -5.2% (Oct 2008 to Sep 2009)
GDP per capita: $43,785 (2008 est. nom.)
Unemployment rate: 7.5% (Q3 2009)
Inflation (CPI): 5.7% (September 2009)
Over the past two decades, the government through economic policies has greatly reduced public ownership and contained the growth of social welfare programs. The UK economy in last couple of decades has passed through periods of deep recession and long sustained growth, and constant annual rate of growth in GDP for last 40 years is 2.46%. One of the most significant changes in the economy of UK in last few decades is the introduction of neo-liberal economics with the advent of the government of Margaret Thatcher of 1979. During this period, most state-owned enterprises in the industrial and service sectors, which since the 1940s had been nationalised, were privatised. The mild recession of 1991 was followed by a sustained period of growth, which was one of most prosperous period in last 150 years
However, currently UK is going through its worst period of recession, with sixth consecutive quarter of recession. According to the current
Finance minster Alistair Darling, “We're facing the worst global financial crisis and recession in 60 years. We've always said that we remain cautious as a result of the high degree of economic uncertainty.'
