THE HUNTER VALLEY WINE INDUSTRY
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Hunter Valley is home to one of Australia’s most successful and renowned wine industry’s. Using Porter’s Five Forces framework, it has been uncovered that there is strong potential for the industry to generate substantial profits in the future. Although the competitive pressures exerted by the bargaining power of buyers (strong) and the intensity of rivalry (moderate to strong) are ultimately acting to erode industry profitability somewhat, these pressures are counteracted to a certain degree by the less significant competitive forces exerted by suppliers (weak), substitutes (moderate) and the threat of new competition (weak).

Firstly, the demand for wine is price inelastic. Secondly, wine and beer are in fact gross complements and not gross substitutes as one’s intuition would imply . Thirdly, in relative terms, wine is now cheaper than both beer and spirits. Fourth, wine appears to be more addictive than either beer or spirits. Fifth, non-price competition is the primary form of competition to take place in the wine market. Sixth, the taxes that government’s place on wine in order to reduce its consumption by individual may not be effective. These and a variety of other findings are discussed in detail in the analysis below.
The final part of this report offers policy recommendations using the findings uncovered using the Five Forces. These recommendations are aimed at increasing the future profitability of firms within the Hunter Valley wine industry and cover areas such as marketing strategy, research and development, collaborative efforts and many others.
