Chapter Four Results and Discussion
In this chapter, I am going to answer my research questions: What hedges are used and how they are distributed in the TEM compositions by Chinese English-major students at different English levels? What are the similarities and differences between Chinese English-major students at different levels of in terms of uses of hedges in their TEM compositions? Is there significant correlation among these students at different proficiencies in uses of hedges in TEM compositions?
4.1 Hedges used and distributed in the TEM compositions
In accordance with Table-4.1, generally speaking, the 2004 TEM-8 writings with higher score featured relatively higher frequency of using hedges and there was steadily increase in using of hedges with rising scores. The frequency of using hedges in articles written by the Advanced group was 19.95 per 1000 words, whereas that used by the Less advanced group was 14.75 per 1000 words. That is to say articles written by English-major college students of higher English level in 2004 TEM-8 featured relatively more hedges that those written by learners of lower English ability. In terms of categories, the higher frequency of using Approximator was 15.65 and in the articles written by the Advanced group again, while the lower frequency of using it was in those writings written by the Less advanced group, which was less 3.38 words per 1000 words than Advanced group. Furthermore, as for the sub-categories of Approximator, the frequency of using Adaptors by the Advanced group was 11.63, which was higher 2.36 words than that by the Less advanced group. As for the Rounders, however, it was the same situation as Approximator: Advanced group used more frequency of Rounders in the TEM-8 writings than the Less advanced group. Meanwhile, in terms of categories, the frequency of using Shield by the Advanced group was 4.30, which was almost double the frequency used by the Less advanced group. In 2004 Tem-8 writings collected in the data, students who got 7 and 8 marks never used Shield. Moreover, as for the sub-categories of Shield, the frequency of using Plausibility
