A lexical item is the basic element of a sentence. An accurate, clear and concretetranslation of a word lays the foundation for a good translation of a sentence or even aparagraph. Therefore, the translation at the lexical level should not be overlooked. In this part,the analysis mainly focuses on the translation of terminology, polysemous words as well asabstract nouns and pronouns. Different translation methods are applied to resolve variousissues, whose ultimate aim is to enhance the contextual effects of the translated text so that thetext is more accessible to the target readers.

4.1.1 Translation of terminology

The terminology of social science texts has the characteristic of complexity because ofthe broad research area of social science and its connection to human’s daily life. (Wei, 2010)In translating terminology, the author attempts to fully understand the meaning of theterminology to avoid rendering false information and to make sure that the translation hasadequate relevance to the target readers, avoiding unnecessary processing efforts of targetreaders in the target language. The methods of direct translation and indirect translation areapplicable to the translation of terminology. According to relevance translation theory, directtranslation can be used in the case where the expression is consistent with the readers’cognitive environment; otherwise, indirect translation should be applied.

5.1 Major findings

Through the translation task, new findings of the translation of social science texts aresummarized. Firstly, in order to enhance the contextual effects of the target text required byrelevance translation theory, the translation methods applicable to social science texts arepointed out in the translation task. First of all, the use of annotation in translating terminologycan provide an understanding of the context so that the annotation is more accessible to thetarget readers. In addition, the method of amplification in translating abstract nouns andpronouns can complete the meaning of the words with the implied or omitted contents,achieving the enhancement of the contextual effects. Furthermore, the method of indirecttranslation allows the translator to replace the linguistic properties of the source text so as toensure the target readers can understand the contextual content.

Secondly, in order to seek coherence between the rigorous language and lively idioms, aChinese four-character idiom is preferable to replace the original idiom because it follows afixed structure and conveys the meaning with concise characters. The linguistic features of aChinese four-character idiom determine its cohesion to the rigorous language. If there is noreplaceable Chinese idiom, the method of indirect translation can be used to convey themeaning of the original words because the main purpose of a social science text is to renderinformation.

In addition to the new findings of the translation of the text, the author develops thetranslation skills and acquires rich knowledge.
