3.1 Translation of Culture-loaded Words

The act of translation is not only the translation of one language into another but also thecommunication between different cultures, which enables readers to understand the culturalknowledge contained in the original text while reading the translated text. Nida also attaches great importance to cultural factors in translation in his bookLanguage and Culture, which is published in China. He regards culture as a symbol system,which actually affirms that culture has acquired a position comparable to language intranslation. He says that translation means communication. Communication is inseparablefrom culture. Therefore, language, culture and translation are closely related. (Nida, 2001:78)

In addition, Vermeer holds a strong objection to the idea that translation is only a matterof language conversion. He believes that translation is basically a cultural transfer. In hisopinion, translators should be bicultural. The functional translation school represented byVermeer believes that translation is mainly cultural translation and the task of the translator isto make the culture of the original language reappear in the target language.

Skopos theory holds that translation is a purposeful communicative behavior. So thepurpose of translation determines the strategies and methods adopted in translation.
