Chapter Two Project Description
2.1 Project Introduction
This translation project is carried out under an English-Chinese simulatedtranslation practice. There are about 18,000 words in the original text and about 27,000words in the translated text. The actual process of the translation work spends more thantwo months. The original text of this project chosen by the author is The Valley ofLagoons, a short narrative novel written by David Malouf. The short story comes from acollection of short stories titled Every Move You Make of David Malouf, which ispublished by Chatto & Windus in 2006. David Malouf was born in
Brisbane, Australia. He is one of the most influential writers inAustralian literature. He is not only a novelist, but a poet and a literary critic. So far, he has published nine novels, five collections ofshort stories, some collections of poems and
essays. His representative works includeThe Great World (1990), Remembering Babylon (1993), The conversations at CurlowCreek (1996) and so on. These works have won lots of awards, such as the MilesFranklin Award, the Commonwealth Novel Prize and the IMPAC Dublin LiteraturePrize. What’s more, Remembering Babylon once has gotten the nomination of theBooker Prize. These achievements make him enjoy a high reputation in European andthe world’s literature. The novel employs the first-person perspective to tell a story about a person namedAngus, who yearns for the mysterious place named The Valley of Lagoon where huntershere go to visit every year, as well as his stories happened around the McGowan’s threechildren, and the hunting activities to the Lagoons which he takes part in. The climax ofthe novel is about an accident on the hunting trip. There are lots of descriptions ofnatural landscapes, characters’ psychology, and dialogues in the novel. As the languageof the whole novel is vivid and brilliant, it makes the reader feel as if he or she wereparticipating the activities in the novel, which resonates the reader with the boundlessyearning for the lagoons life inAustralia.

2.2 Pre-translation Preparation
The preparatory stage of translation refers to the main preparatory work beforestarting the translation of the original text, which is significance for the actual process of the translation work(Wang Hongyin, 2002:6). Since the text is an English novel, theauthor has read the novel at least three times before formally entering the stage oftranslating. At the first reading, the main task is to look up the new words andcomprehend the content of the whole text; at the second read-through stage, it is toanalyze the linguistic features and the difficult points. In order to understand the content properly, the
literature review is necessary. However, after accessing to lots of information, the research and information about theshort novel The Valley of Lagoons is very limited. Nevertheless, the analysis of thewriter himself and the charismatics of his works is also very important to get a betterunderstanding of the original text and ensure the accuracy of the Chinese translation. InChina, the research on David Malouf’s works is mainly reflected in two aspects. Firstly, some researchers have given some points from a macroscopic view, such as someresearch included in A History of Australian Literature written by Huang Yuanshen, inwhich David Malouf is included.
