As Stuart Hall points out,“identity is a process, identity is split. Identity is not a fixed point but an ambivalentpoint (16). Ondaatje examines anxieties about the way in which people construct theirown personal identity in terms of name, body, language and culture. The English Patient focuses on the relationships among four characters who haveall been deeply damaged by World War II. As the concept of nationality, boundaries, and social confinement are no longer stable in the wartime desert, national bordersand identity in the novel become blurred and ambiguous. The war breaks theboundaries of nations, so identity also brings the feeling of lack for a definableidentity. The characters’ identities are deconstructed by their attempts to escape fromtheir names, their bodies, and their environment.
The most fascinating character, whose identity is kept as a myth until the end ofthe work, is Ladislaus de Almasy. The novel begins with an anonymous “she” and“the man”. The fact that the English patient’s flesh is burned beyond recognition andhis memory is vague makes it easy for the readers to find a blank space to deconstructhis identity. His multi-dimensional identity can be seen from his anonymity, multiplenationalities and languages, faceless contenance.
Clearly, names and namelessness are central to Ondaatje’s problematizing ofidentity: he points out in the acknowledgements section of his semi-autobiographicalwork, Running in the Family, that the use of names “may give an air of authenticity”(206). In other words, names are capable of providing verification; they have thepower to distinguish, substantiate and confirm, and above all they confer identity andestablish identification. To be named, therefore, is to belong, to be located. In thissense, escaping from the restriction of a name allows an exploration of identity.
Hana is a Canadian nurse who belongs to the Commonwealth. She comes to thewar and loses almost all her relatives, including her father, her boyfriend, and herunborn baby. The trauma of loss of her three important men in the war makes herdeny her own female identity and then possession by the other three men in villa leadsher to an dependence to men. All these experiences result in indeterminacy of herfemale identity.
II. Reconstruction of Identity
As Fledderus suggested, “all the charactershave war wounds [...] and are on personal quest for healing” The fact that thecharacters are experiencing the horrors of the war together has helped them cope withthe trauma. They have become a community, dependent on each other’s company.Hence, with mutual help, the four characters reconstruct their identities and acquiretheir new selves.
A. Almasy: Transcending Nationalism
The sanctity and dignity of every human life, regardless of race, nation orreligion, must be honored. Regarding the English patient, his hatred toward ownershipthroughout the whole novel, especially after his tragic love during the war, hereconstructs his identity through transcending nationalism.
This is a novel that moves beyond interpretation as a post-colonial literature of“resistance”, incorporating boundaries in a way that invites interrogation from atransnational perspective.
