1.2 The purpose of the research
According to the Collins COBUILD Learner’s Dictionary, the function of something or someone is the useful thing that they do or are intended to do (451). And the dictionary explains the meaning of “underachieving” is that if someone underachieves in something such as school work or a job, they do not perform as well as they could (1197). In this
thesis, the term “function” means the foreign teachers do their teaching to fulfill the purpose of improving students’ English language ability. The term “positive function” means the factors enhancing language ability. The term “negative function” means the factors causing the failure of language learning. The underachieving positive functions mean the positive functions that haven’t been played on improving students’ English language ability. This study is intended to research in terms of functions of foreign teachers on cultivating student’s English listening and speaking ability in primary schools. The study involves two primary schools (the same teaching level, same number of English class each week and mature local English teachers) in Jinjiang District, Chengdu, school A (Chengdu Jinjiang Foreign Language Primary School, one foreign language school with foreign teachers) and school B (De Sheng Branch of Yan Daojie Primary School, one school without foreign teachers). The questionnaires are used among 12 foreign teachers in primary schools to collect the data on the characteristics of foreign teachers. The classroom observations on 3 foreign teachers and one local English teacher’s classes in school A, questionnaires among 30 students at random in school A, questionnaires among 4 local English teachers, and standard tests (Grade one, Cambridge Young Learners' English Tests and SEAS PROFICENCY TEST) in 92 students are aimed at realizing foreign teachers’ classroom teaching, students’ needs of foreign language classes, students’ evaluation of their teaching, local English teachers’ evaluation of their teaching and foreign teachers’ functions on cultivating students’ English listening and speaking ability. Furthermore, the interviews with three foreign teachers and one school leader in charge of foreign teachers in school A are used to collect the data on the management of foreign teachers. These data will be used to explain the findings and discussion results.
