Chapter One Task Description
1.1 Background Information of the Task
The material selected for this practice report is a game design-related talk ' Environment Design as Spatial Cinematography: Theory and Practice ' - held at the 2019 World Developers Conference (GDC). It is 52 minutes long and covers scientific principles and knowledge in aesthetics, architecture, and psychology. In this talk, the presenter explored her notion of spatial cinematography in theory and practice using examples from GTA V Online DLC (pre-production to final art). She walked attendees through some ways in which thinking like a cinematographer can help you build more powerful and effective games, using lots of references to the art and science of commanding a viewer's gaze. She showed how a truly cinematic experience can be developed by adapting film concepts such as shots, editing, and 2D screen design, as well as understanding how the player interacts with and perceives the game environment.
There are two reasons to choose this talk as the material for this practice: First, the presenter Miriam Bellard is a designer of Rockstar Games, a world-class game manufacturer, and the game design concepts she shared are undoubtedly practical and valuable. The presenter used a lot of examples to clarify the theories mentioned in the talk. If it can be translated into Chinese, it will be of great reference value for domestic art creators. Secondly, when I first saw this video there were neither subtitles nor translation, so I decided to use the talk as the material for this report.
1.2 Analysis of the Material
This is a popular scientific talk. Academic discourse is often regarded as a relatively fixed set of genre or discourse statutes with an objective style that is unrelated to the personal emotions of the author, while academic writing is a static act of research presentation (Li, et al, 2017:17). However, as the presenter often thinks out of the box and improvises away from the slides, the speech will again have a lot of colloquial expressions.
In terms of vocabulary, the main content of the talk involves game design, environmental design, aesthetics, psychology, and photography, so there are more specialized terms in this material. At the same time, due to the presence of impromptu content, the wording of the presenter may sometimes be redundant. This requires the interpreter to fully prepare the terminology before interpretation and convey the presenter's meaning in a timely and accurate manner (Li and Niu, 2012:36).
In terms of syntactic structure, in this talk, the presenter often uses syntactic structures which are commonly used in technical English text when introducing academic concepts, such as passive-voice sentences. These cumbersome structures and repetitive information require the interpreter to reanalyze, integrate, and simplify the original material. Popular scientific articles are different from professional literature and have their own writing characteristics. 1. strict wording, 2. concise grammar, 3. distinctive literary language, 4. rich terminology.
