2.1 Key concepts
After review of the literature of ICC, it has been found by the author that the termbears certain similarity with some terms used in the research domain of interculturalcommunication, like intercultural communicative competence and interculturalcompetence. For one thing, it stands to reason that the difference between ICC andintercultural communicative competence is in terms of translation. For another, manyscholars, like Yang Ying & Zhuang Enping (2007) and Hu Wenzhong (2013),regarded ICC identical with intercultural competence; accordingly, the thesis wouldalso take the same practice.
Many scholars (Weinstein, 1969; Wiemann, 1977; Wiemann & Backlund, 1980)defined ICC from the perspectives of “effectiveness” and “appropriateness” of thecommunication process. However, taking the context into consideration, Spitzbergand Cupach (1984) viewed ICC as a capability in a specific situation. Generally, theconcept of ICC includes three factors, namely appropriateness, effectiveness andcontextuality. As a result, this research will define ICC as the capability to functioneffectively and achieve good communicative results through appropriate behavior inthe intercultural context.
Cultural intelligence, in a narrow sense, refers to ability at the individual level.Earley and Ang (2003) first proposed the concept of CQ, the ability of individuals toeffectively collect and process information, make judgments and take correspondingmeasures to cope with the new cultural context. Subsequently, Peterson (2004), from the perspective of improving the effect of intercultural communication, furtherdefined it as the ability to maintain a friendly and harmonious relationship withcolleagues, clients or partners from different cultural backgrounds in communication.These different definitions could be concluded as the ability of individuals to adapt tothe new culture throughout interaction with others from different culturalbackgrounds.
2.2 Relevant literature
In this part, previous studies on intercultural communication competence would bebriefly reviewed in the light of the research contents. The author would review indetail the literature on the correlation between cultural intelligence and cognitive,affective and behavioral outcomes in the intercultural context, interculturalcommunication competence in particular. And limitations of the previous studiesconcerning ICC and the relationship between CQ and ICC would be put forward inthe last section.
2.2.1 Intercultural communication competence
In the past decade, scholars have conducted a lot of research on interculturalcommunication competence. On the whole, according to the research content, thesestudies could be divided into four categories, namely studies on the cultivation modelsof ICC in FLT, on the ICC levels of certain groups, on the relationship between ICC and other variables, and on the frameworks and scales for gauging ICC.
(1) Articles on the cultivation models of ICC in FLT: According to Hu (2013),most of the Chinese scholars in the region of intercultural communication are teachersand students at college and university, and the specific methods of cultivatingintercultural communication competence are closely related to foreign languageteaching, English teaching in particular.
