摘要严复是中国翻译史上赫赫有名的人物，他的翻译作品一直都是学者们研究的焦点，因为这其中隐含着一个深刻的悖论:一方面他的译作融入了较多的创作性成分，与源语文本有较大的出入，令人难以界定他的作品到底是翻译还是再创作;另一方面他的译作独具特色，从卷峡浩繁的其他译作中脱颖而出、独领风骚，对他所处的社会产生了深远的影响。传统的规约性翻译理论侧重用一系列的语言规则来考察严复的译作，通常只得出他的译作不忠实的结论，并不能解决上述的悖论。20世纪90年代，文化翻译学派的异军突起为解决这个悖论提供了崭新的视角。本文借助勒弗维尔的文化操纵理论，尝试从意识形态和诗学两方面解释严复的选材和翻译
