Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Research
With the rapid development of economy, higher requirements have been put forward on higher vocational and technical
Education in recent years in China, especially on the English education of the vocational colleges. The English Curriculum Basic Requirements for the Higher Vocational and Technical Colleges (Trial) issued by Ministry of Education in 2000 proposed the general goal of public English curriculum for the stage of vocational and technical colleges. It clearly stated that the aim of the course is to develop students’ practical abilities of language use (Ministry of Education, 2000). The Requirements, which is based on the principle “practicality”, require English teachers to not only inculcate the basic knowledge of English to students, but strengthen their practical abilities of using language. As one of the basic skills of English, reading is an indispensable part of English teaching. Because of the lack of natural language environment, the most common way for Chinese students to learn English is through reading, which is not only a vital means of language learning, but also an important way of gaining information. Therefore, it is believed that reading is the most essential one among the four basic skills. Because of the importance of reading, the Requirements also raised the specific reading skills that higher vocational and technical college students are supposed to master, which mainly contain seven parts: 1) Students can catch the main ideas; 2) Students can grasp some detailed information; 3) Students can guess unfamiliar words from context; (4) Students can make inferences according to the context; 5) Students can catch the author’s purposes and attitudes; 6) Students can draw conclusions about the passage; 7) Students know how to skim and scan a passage (Ministry of Education, 2000). According to these seven parts, it is obvious to see that it was students’ discourse proficiency that was given much emphasis. Undoubtedly, English teachers and students should pay more attention to the cultivation of these abilities during the teaching and learning process.
