consequently, they can help readers to comprehending the text.
3. Reading strategies
Strategies of reading comprehension involve the use of language cues to decode the message or information of the written word. Reading the words of a text is one thing, but comprehending the meaning is the vital point for the reader. As a communication between the reader and the writer, English reading comprehension still needs some instructions of strategies. For Chinese students, acquiring some reading strategies is also quite necessary.
3.1 Using efficient silent reading techniques
Silent reading can promote the efficiency of reading. It not only saves the reading time but also protects your thinking chart from not being interrupted.
a. You don’t need to “pronounce” each word to yourself.
b. Try to visually perceive more than one word at a time, preferably phrases.
c. Unless a word is absolutely crucial to global understanding, skip over it and try to infer its meaning through its context.
3.2 Guessing
Reading is a “guessing game” to some extend. But it is not just a game but also a kind of prediction, which is also an important technique to read. When reading, readers can use guessing to their advantage to:
a. guess the meaning of a word,
b. guess the grammatical relationship(e.g. a pronoun reference),
c. guess the logic relationship of the text to a whole view,
d. infer the implied meaning or meaning between the lines,
e. guess about the cultural reference,
f. guess the message or ideas of the writer.
Readers should utilize all their language skills and put forth as much effort as possible to be on target with their hypotheses. And the key to a successful guessing is to make it reasonably accurate. Readers should be encouraged to use effective compensation strategies in which they fill gaps in their competence by intelligent attempts to use whatever clues are available to them. Language-based clues include word analysis, word associations, and textual structure. Non-linguistic clues come from context, situation, cultural background and so on.
3.3 Skim ming
Perhaps the two most valuable reading strategies for learners are skimming and scanning. Skimming consists of quickly running one’s eyes across a whole text (an
essay, article, or chapter, for example) to get the gist. Skimming gives readers the advantages of being able to predict the purpose of the passage, the main topic or message, and possibly some of the developing or supporting ideas. This gives them a “head start” as they embark on more focused reading.
3.4 Scanning
Scanning is the technique of quick searching for some particular piece or pieces of information in text. It is often used to look for names or dates, to find a definition of a key concept, or to list a certain number of supporting details. The purpose of scanning is to pick out certain specific information without reading through the whole text. For academic reading, scanning is absolutely essential. In vocational or general English, scanning is important in dealing with genres like schedules, manuals, forms, etc.
Conclusion
For Chinese students, English is a complete new language. And the communicative obstacles between the reader and the writer are often caused by differences of the English and Chinese. On the basis of the brief analysis of those factors that cause the communicative obstacles in Chinese students’ English reading practice, we know that, not only the linguistic know
