More recently, however, these practices have come under scrutiny by international and national regulators, the media, and NGOs. In one African country, Great Builds were even brought to trial for their corrupt practices.

You are an ethics adviser to GetInTouch, a new up and coming social networking site on the internet. The founders of GetInTouch have been aware of accusations that other social networking providers have been facing concerning the violation of their users’ privacy. Users of social networking sites are usually made aware that this free service is financed by advertising when they sign up.
There have been major concerns, however, over the extent to which social network providers make profile data posted by the users available to third parties for targeted marketing and over the fact that these practices are not fully disclosed to the users.
Other criticisms include the retaining of user information after an account has been deactivated, the retaining of email addresses of non-users who are invited to join the site but decline, and the broadcasting of users’ activities on other websites. The management of GetInTouch ask you to write a report that will set out how the company can effectively address the issue of users’ privacy for their social networking site.

Your report to the company should cover the following:
• A brief outline of the ethical issue. Use ONE ethical theory to justify why this issue deserves attention.
• An outline of one or several courses of action that the company can undertake to address this issue.
• A reflection about the LIMITATIONS of the courses of action you have suggested.

Your word limit must not exceed 1,200 words. Do not forget to include your word count in your report.

The report will be marked using the following criteria:
• Outlining of the ethical issue described in the case
• Correct application of one ethical theory to the issue described in the case
• Quality of the recommendations made to the company
• Quality of reflection about the limitations
• Style and Presentation (including accurate referencing and authenticity)

Submission deadline is Tuesday, 16 February, 2010, 4pm. Failure to submit on time will result in a fail grade.
