It is interesting that so many attempts to theorize vision and visuality arewedded to models that emphasize a continuous and overarchjng Western
visual tradition. Obviously at times it is strategically necessary to map outand pose the outlines of a dominant Western speculative or scopic traditionof vision that is continuous or in some sense effective, for instance, fromPlato to the present, or from the Quattrocento into the twentieth century,or to whenever. My concern is not so much to argue against these models,which have their own usefulness, but rather to insist there are someimportant discontinuities that such hegemoniC constructions haveprevented from coming into view. The specific account that interests mehere, one that has become almost ubiquitous and continues to be developedin a variety of forms, is that the emergence of photography and cinema inthe nineteenth century is a fulfilment of a long unfolding of technologicaland/ or ideological development in the West in which the camera obscuraevolves into the photographic camera.
